Royal Belum State Park, a 117,500-hectare tropical wilderness, was designated a protected area by the Malaysian government in 2007 due to its rich biodiversity. It was shortlisted for UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 2019. Access requires a boat ride from Banding Island, with permits and licensed guides mandatory. NGOs are actively working to protect the remaining areas.
